William “St. Thomas” Smith (1862 – 1947) was born in Belfast, Ireland and died at St. Thomas, Ontario. His family immigrated to Canada, and settled at Beaverton, Ontario, when he was a child. He received art training at the Ontario School of Art. Smith later worked in the studio of Toronto artist J.W.L. Forster and formed a close friendship with fellow painter A. Curtis Williamson. After marrying Julia, a classmate at the OSA, Smith settled in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1887, where he taught art at Alma College. In his lifetime, his works were exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists, the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Toronto Industrial Exhibition and many commercial galleries.
